There are three ways to save your Design Editor files: Save As, Save, and AutoSave.
Save As
Save As works just like other applications. Go to File > Save As to save a duplicate version of your working file with a new name.
Save
Save also works like other applications. Use this to manually update your saved working file.
To save, either hit Ctrl + S, go to File > Save or click the Save icon in the top left of your toolbar.
Backups
By default, backup files are kept every time you click Save. These files save in your working folder with a “.bak” file type. Each time you click Save, the working file is updated and the previous save becomes a backup file.
Backups can be helpful in the case of a crash or other sudden stoppage of your session to prevent you from losing work.
If you want to stop backup files from being created when you click Save:
Go to File > Application Settings > General Settings and uncheck “Create incremental backups on save”
Depending on how often you click Save, there can be many backup files generated by the time you finish your workday/week. Delete unnecessary backups when you are ready for a cleanup.
AutoSave
AutoSave, as the name suggests, makes automatic backups of your working file.
Full disclosure, AutoSave isn’t… perfect. It might be better for you to create your own backups with Save (see above).
By default, AutoSave is set to on, with a frequency of Never. With this default, backups are generated only on startup and somewhat randomly. Additionally, AutoSave backups don’t save to your working folder but only under Documents > Ice_Registration > IceBackUps.
Cleaning up AutoSave backups files
The AutoSave files in the Documents folder stay there until you delete them. A good practice, especially if you use Design Editor regularly, is to go into this folder and delete old backups to clear up some storage on your computer. Make sure to also delete them from your Recycle Bin, too.
